The crypto market as a whole trended lower this week, with choppy trading and a sharper pullback late in the week. Early in the week, BTC traded around $80,000 and ETH in the 2,400 range; later in the week, both major assets kept falling, and on October 30 BTC briefly dropped to $76,630 while ETH fell below $2,200.
On the industry front, on October 29, Binance disclosed an abnormality in its hot wallet and temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals. On-chain analysis suggests the incident may involve the EIP-7702 delegation mechanism, and Tether and Circle froze more than $1.5 billion and $800 million of related stablecoins, respectively. On October 30, Binance released preliminary findings, saying the incident may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, with the attacker accessing the relevant service containers to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions; no evidence of wallet private key leakage has been found so far. Binance estimates the total impact of the incident at about $6.3 billion and has frozen about $3 billion of on-chain assets so far. It said it will cover all losses through its SAFU fund and company funds, while working with law enforcement to trace and recover the funds. Around the same time, Polymarket also disclosed a security incident involving a third-party service provider, which affected some users.
On the macro front, on October 28, the Federal Reserve held the federal funds rate at 3.75%–4.00%, with two officials advocating a 25-basis-point rate hike. U.S. Q3 GDP grew at an annualized 3.4%, the September PCE price index rose 3.6% year over year, and core PCE rose 3.1% year over year. On October 29, the Nasdaq fell 1.37%, and U.S. tech stocks pulled back.
According to CoinGecko, BTC is priced at $77,397.51, down 5.0% over the past 7 days; ETH is priced at $2,213.59, down 7.7% over the past 7 days, with ETH falling more than BTC.
